The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Pakistan, in a statement released on Sunday, condemned, “in the strongest possible terms,” what it termed “the cowardly, hideous and barbaric terrorist act of targeting the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The statement comes amid confirmation from Iranian state media that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in Israeli and United States strikes launched yesterday against Iran.

“Recalling the bravery, resistance, steadfastness, and lifelong devotion of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, to the ideals of independence, dignity, and resistance,” the statement reads, it reaffirms “unwavering solidarity with the noble aspirations of the Islamic Revolution.”

Further, the embassy offers its firm commitment to the enduring principles of the Islamic Revolution, emphasising “that we will stand by the eternal aspirations of this Great Martyr until our last breath and the last droplet of our blood.”

The statement deems Khamenei “a great historical figure who, like his Great Ancestor, Imam Hussein (PBUH), was martyred bravely alongside his innocent family at the hands of the most despicable, vicious and cowardly elements in Karbala and did not surrender and succumb.”

The struggles of Khamenei, the embassy writes, terming him a Great Martyr and tireless scholar, “will forever be recorded in history and will be a model for the free people of the world.”

“The blood of the Great Leader…made the ever-green sapling of the Islamic Republic more fertile and resilient,” the statement adds.

Stating that Iran is founded upon strong constitutional institutions and well-established legal mechanisms, the embassy adds that “relying on the solid structure established by the great Imams of the Islamic Revolution, relying on the blood of martyrs, and in any circumstance, the country will, in full accordance with its Constitution, ensure continuity of leadership and governance with unity, resilience, and steadfast determination.”

It adds that the Islamic Republic will elect its new leadership, “courageously and steadfastly continuing on its spiritual and humane path ever after.”

Khamenei, 86, was martyred in the most ambitious series of attacks on Iran in decades that have, so far, killed 201 and injured over 700.

US President Donald Trump said the air strikes on Iranian targets were aimed at ending a decades-long threat from Iran and ensuring it could not develop a nuclear weapon as he sought to justify a risky gambit that seemed to go against his professed opposition to American involvement in complex overseas conflicts.

However, Iran retaliated in the wake of what Israel and the US have termed “Operation Epic Fury”, launching hundreds of missiles and drones in response to the initial attacks. Iranian missiles have targeted US troops in the region and cities in Israel and Arab countries allied with Washington.
