Pride in heritage and hometown turned into multimillion-rupee bids Saturday when the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department held its second auction of exclusive personalised vehicle number plates.
In a single electrifying day at Arena Hall, Qayyum Sports Complex, bidders drove the total proceeds to Rs470.3 million across just 30 selected plates, many featuring the names of prominent tribes and districts in transliterated English.
The undisputed star of the auction was DAWAR 1, which fetched an astonishing Rs175 million, purchased by Inzamam-ul-Haq. The figure is believed to be the highest ever paid for a personalised plate in the province. Runner-up honours went to ORAKZAI 1, snapped up by former Senator and MPA Aurangzeb Khan for Rs41 million.

Other high-value plates that changed hands included: WAZIRISTAN 1 – Rs40.6 million, BAJAUR 1 – Rs33.5 million, MOHMAND 1 – Rs32.1 million, MEHSUD 1 – Rs22 million, KHYBER 1 – Rs20.1 million, GUJJAR 1 – Rs16.3 million, PASHTUN 1 – Rs13.2 million.
Strong interest continued for plates representing other areas and clans: BUNER 1 – Rs9.5 million, JADOON 1 – Rs7.1 million, MARDAN 1 – Rs6.8 million, DIR 1 – Rs6.7 million, KHALIL 1 – Rs6.5 million, KHATTAK 1 – Rs6.1 million, and TAJ 1 – Rs4.2 million.
The auction was supervised by Director General Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Abdul Haleem Khan and attended by senior department officials. Bidders, many from influential business and tribal families, showed intense enthusiasm for plates that allow vehicle owners to proudly display their ethnic or regional identity on the road.

Officials say the overwhelming response confirms the scheme’s popularity and its ability to generate significant revenue for the provincial exchequer while celebrating the cultural diversity of K-P.
In 2024, the Excise Department of Sindh auctioned off the premium number plate (A 1) for Rs100 million. Muzammil Kareem placed the highest bid of Rs100 million for the number plate. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon awarded the ownership certificate of the plate to Mazhar Kareem.
The premium number plate 786 fetched Rs26.5 million in auction, with Sarosh, a businessman, placing the highest bid. Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah awarded Sarosh the ownership certificate of the number plate.
