Four killed as rising crime, ‘police failure’ push residents to take law in own hands

KARACHI:

Amid a surge in violent street crime in the metropolis, frustrated residents have begun confronting criminals directly, with two incidents in Orangi Town and Jauhar Morr highlighting the growing public unrest.

In the first incident, a robbery turned violent in Orangi Town Sector 1 on Friday night when armed muggers opened fire, injuring four people, including shopkeepers. However, locals managed to overpower two of the muggers, subjecting them to torture, and leaving them critically wounded. The two later succumbed to their injuries at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The injured civilians were identified as 19-year-old Asif, 22-year-old Hassan, 23-year-old Abdul Rahman, and 32-year-old Syed Kashan Hussain, all of whom are currently under treatment.

Police and Rangers rushed to the scene following the incident. Police recovered two handguns, live bullets, and spent shells from the site. Khumiso Khan, SHO of Orangi Town police station, identified the deceased robbers as Umar Khan and Shahbaz, both residents of Banaras with previous criminal records. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to investigate the events.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, a motorist shot dead two robbers while they were fleeing after a failed robbery attempt at Jauhar Morr Flyover. The citizen reportedly pursued the muggers and fired at them, resulting in their deaths.

The two incidents have sparked widespread anger among residents, reflecting growing frustration over the city’s rising lawlessness and the police failure to ensure public safety.
