GILGIT:

Armed terrorists attacked a police vehicle in the Thore area of Diamer on Monday, killing three officers and injuring four others, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), officials confirmed.

The police officials came under attack as they returned after destroying the poppy crop.

The assault occurred at about 2am while the police team was on duty. The assailants opened fire on their vehicle, killing three personnel at the scene. The injured—among them a DSP—were taken to a nearby hospital, where they’re being treated.

Following the attack, a large police contingent cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. The attackers managed to flee.

Gilgit-Baltistan Home Minister Sajid Baig confirmed, “Three police personnel embraced martyrdom, and four others, including a DSP, were wounded.” He assured that security forces were responding quickly and efforts to arrest the perpetrators were ongoing.

Shabbir Mir, spokesperson for the G-B government, confirmed the incident and said authorities were in close coordination with district officials. “All necessary steps are being taken to provide the best medical care to the injured,” he added.

An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the attack.

Meanwhile, the chief minister G-B Justice R Yar Mohammad has taken notice and ordered relevant departments to submit a report and take immediate action against those responsible.
