United States President Donald Trump on Friday announced on social media that there would be a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine from May 9 until May 11.
Trump also mentioned some details of the truce in his social media accounts by saying that the total suspension of kinetic activities and a 1,000-person bilateral prisoner swap would be part of the ceasefire.
“This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by [Russian] President Vladimir Putin and [Ukrainian] President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war. Talks are continuing on ending this major conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day,” he added.
Russia had previously announced a two-day unilateral ceasefire to mark its May 9 World War II Victory Day on Saturday.
Ukraine previously stated that it too had offered a truce but that this had been ignored by Moscow.
